Miami Valley prepares for freezing rain

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – Freezing rain is making the march into the Miami Valley.

Long after the sun goes down on Monday, salt crews are filling up trucks to battle the icy roads.

“It’s a business opportunity when we see ice,” said Drew Parramore who owns Ohio Green Works.

Companies like Ohio Green Works are working through the night and into the morning.

For ten hours, the driver’s side of a salt truck is Parramore’s office.

“We get salt down before the rain hits,” said Parramore. “That way it’s safe for people to come into work.”

The Ohio Department of Transportation is also expecting a long night of work. Crews will begin reporting to work at 11:30 p.m. on Monday night. ODOT expects to be fully staffed by 6 a.m. to battle back icy conditions.

For drivers heading to work in the morning, first responders ask for extra attention to be paid on the roads including overpasses and bridges.

“They just look wet,” said Lt. Doug Baumgartner with the Moraine Fire Department. “The road before and after the bridge can be wet and look wet. The bridge can look identical to that but in actuality be black ice.”

If you find yourself skidding on a patch of black ice, do not panic.

“A lot of them want to tend to slam on their brakes,” said Baumgartner. “On a bridge with ice, the best thing to do is to take your foot off of the accelerator and try to ride it out.”
