DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Firefighters saved a dog from a fire in Dayton Sunday morning.

Flames sparked after 9 a.m. near the corner of West Riverview Avenue and Vernon Drive.

Crews said they believed the house was vacant, but while they were fighting the fire, they heard a dog inside yelping. Neighbors told officials no one lived there but they believed that someone was raising dogs inside the house.

Firefighters were able to rescue the animal and it was taken away by an animal control officer.

Crews said they had some complications fighting the fire. They were initially dispatched to a different location. By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the flames had progressed.

No word yet on what may have started the fire.

Officials said the incident is suspicious.
